  • Introduction

On the occasion of the celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Documentation Center of Water and Environment (CDAMAZ), the XVII edition of this seminar was held in Zaragoza from October 17 to 19. Representatives of more than a hundred libraries and documentation centers specialized in the environment and protected natural spaces from 16 Autonomous Communities met together.

Most of the seminar was held at the Environmental Center of the Ebro, where they presented communications and various workshops: Bibliometrics by Isidro Aguillo (CSIC); Cards Sorting by Mario Pérez (University of Barcelona), Canvas Methodology by José Pino (Sierra Nevada Natural Park) and how we can address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in our centers by the President of SABID (Spanish Association of Archives, Libraries, Documentaries and Museums) Alicia Sellés. We were also able to visit the wonderful library of CDAMAY (Amaya Sport City) in the Monastery of Santo Domingo and the Center for Agrifood Research and Technology of Aragon (CITA).

Two of the communications presented at this seminar were awarded the CCB (Library Cooperation Council) seal. These communications were: "Biblioteca de Semillas" of the Polytechnic School of the University of Zaragoza and the "Directorio de fuentes de información sobre energía" created by the Network of Energy Libraries.

Finally, Federico Buyolo, Director General of the High Commission for the 2030 Agenda of Spain, spoke about how libraries can advance the 2030 Agenda.

As on other occasions, we had time to exchange ideas about the various publications of the centers and to take advantage of breaks (some sponsored by Soria Natural) or excursions to make professional contacts. The hosts offered us a guided tour of the Ebro and the Aljafería Palace.

  • Seminar development

    Wednesday 17th October 2018

The Director of the Environment and Sustainability Agency Carmen Cebrián and the Councilor and Delegate for Environment and Mobility of the Zaragoza City Council Teresa Artigas welcomed us.

After the presentation of the activity report, some administrative obstacles in the creation of the RECIDA Association were discussed, which we will try to resolve soon. It was also noted that it would be better to work on specific projects and that it would be better for interested centers to join than to maintain the existing working groups.

The following papers were then presented during the day:

Dynamization of libraries through YouTube. Alfonso Peña. Cedreac
Energy Directory. José Antonio Sánchez Montero. CNMC. Network of Energy Libraries "Energy Documentation Committee".
Open Journal. Mercedes Barreno. Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism.
Seed library. Adriana Oliva. University of Zaragoza.
Zicloteka. Manu González. Cristina Enea Foundation.
Learn Nature: Open catalog of natural sites of pedagogical interest. Ana Pardo. CEIDA (University Extension and Environmental Dissemination Center).

Next, Isidro Aguillo from the Superior Council of Scientific Research (CSIC) made a Dimensions workshop.

And we ended the intense day with a guided visit of the Ebro, conducted by Olga Conde and Mariano Mérida from VoluntaRíos.

    Thursday 18th October 2018

We started the day with the workshop "Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Specialized Libraries" given by Alicia Sellés, President of Fesabid.

This was followed by another on Canvas methodology of "business models" applied to the environmental information and documentation centers by José Pino of the Sierra Nevada National Park.

Then we continued with the communications of the centers:

Surfing the networks. Mari Cruz Lerga. Point of Information and Coordination of Environmental Volunteering in Navarra.
The Green Libraries Network of Somontano de Barbastro. Laura Fontova. Somontano de Barbastro region.
The adventure of cooperating at the university. Roser Gómez. Catalonia Polytechnic University (UPC) Manresa.
Presentation of the mobility and air quality suitcase and the air quality measuring devices. Yolanda Monteiro. Environmental Education Documentation Service (SCDEA).
Access to UN information resources: SDGs and Libraries. Chelo Pons. UN Depositary Library. ONUBIB. University of Valencia

As the night fell, Mario Pérez Montoro the University of Barcelona led a workshop on cart sorting in the refectory of the Monastery of Santo Domingo, CDAMAZ’s headquarters.

At the traditional regional dinner in the medieval cellars of the monastery, we said goodbye to four important members of this network by retirement: Jacinto Prieto, Alejandro del Moral, Mercedes Barreno and Carme Duran, who we hope will remain with us in some form, and Teresa Canyelles delighted those present with the agro-story "La boina" (The beret) by Gustavo Duch.

    Friday 19th October 2018

First thing in the morning, thanks to the organization of Marta Carracedo, director of the CITA Library, we visited the Center for Agrifood Research and Technology in Aragon. Its director, José Antonio Dominguez, welcomed us and informed us about the Center´s areas of work. Afterwards, Alberto Bernués, researcher of the Animal Production and Health Department, told us about the sustainability and livestock projects they are working on. We then visited the facilities of the Horticultural Germplasm Bank, whose director, Cristina Mallor, researcher of the Horticulture Department, explained all the varieties kept there. We also visited the library and finally, with the help of researchers Alicia Cirujeda and Gabriel Pardo from the Plant Health Unit, we visited the Arvense Garden, which is the most important of its kind in Spain, with over 250 species. We were impressed by their scientific work!

Back at the Ebro Environment Center, Federico Buyolo García, Director General of Spain´s High Commission for the 2030 Agenda, spoke about his work and how libraries can be drivers of this change. A debate on these topics followed.

Afterwards, Elena Morato from AEMET gave us a workshop presentation on how she handled DOI and the topic of open data in his institution, which led to an interesting exchange of ideas that will be useful for professional work.

To conclude, the following proposals were made:

    • Attendance at congresses: Liternatura, Fesabid...
    • Increase in staff for social network maintenance: Lola Burgos and Guillermo Ayala join Twitter along with Susana Fernández.
    • Improving articles in Wikipedia and Wikimedia.
    • Celebrations of environmental anniversaries: RECIDA Day 17.09, Bees 20.05, Natura 2000 21.05, Nature Week 24.05-05.06, etc.
    • Web Portal. Ana Pardo and Cristina will take turns in maintaining to improve the contribution of news to the portal.

    • Inclusion of an infographics workshop by Mario Perez (UB) in the next seminar.
    • Photo contest. Possibility of collaboration with the Spanish Association of Nature Photographers (AEFONA).

Finally, we watched the videos that Chelo Pons had prepared from previous editions.

During the meeting, Alfonso Peña from CEDREAC, recorded interviews and images for a video he made about RECIDA.

Finally, the participants made an evaluation and discussed possible venues for the next seminar: Valencia, Jaca, Bértiz, Valsaín.
