Canary cedar (Juniperus cedrus)

An endemic plant of the Canary Islands, which in the woods exceeds ten metres and in rocky areas and cracks it is smaller and has more stunted growth. It is very similar to the juniper, Juniperus oxycedrus, which inhabits the continent. In La Gomera, it is threatened because there are few individuals with the result that its conservation is highly important. The leaves of 1.5 centimetres are rigid, prickly, dark green and with two white lines on the underside. At Los Roques, we can see them living together with strawberry trees, Arbutus canariensis, autochthonous Canarian pines, Pinus canariensis, and other endemic species that are very rare.
