Canary Islands Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus ssp. rigidum)

A Canarian endemism with the stature of a shrub which under optimum conditions can reach a height of over seven metres. It is abundant in the undergrowth of areas covered in laurisilva. In order to identify it, it is only necessary to take a look at the leaves, since they are covered in short hairs which grow in an opposed manner. As it grows straight and slim it was used in agriculture as a pole for the banana and tomato plantations and, thanks to its flexibility, it was used for country basketry. It has attractive white flowers with a very pleasant smell. Flowering: March-mid April
