Mocán (Visnea mocanera)

An endemism of Macaronesia which reaches 10 to 12 metres in height and which can occasionally be found among the laurisilva, aboveb all in the thermophile, dry monteverde. Its most common habitat is located between 400 and 800 metres. The small leaves with a saw edge and little hairs on the underside help to differentiate it. Its distribution close to human settlements has affected its scarce current representation as it has been much used. The Canarian natives used to make a spirit from the fruits, yoyas, called "yersequén".
