Parque Nacional Garajonay

Macaronesian buckthorn (Rhamnus glandulosa)

A species endemic to Macaronesia which grows to a height of eight to ten metres.  It can be found both in the laurisilva and in the fayal brezal, both as isolated individuals and forming thickets. It is easy to recognise thanks to its leaves, with a serrated edge, which have a pair of glands at the base, giving it its scientific name. Its fruits are food for the birds of the Park in midsummer, which is the most critical time of the year for bird foods due to the lack of other fruit.
