Discover Madrid

Madrid, the capital of Spain since 1561, is located a few kilometres from the geographical centre of the Iberian Peninsula. Currently, the city proper is home to more than three million people and the surrounding Autonomous Community of Madrid is home to a total of six and a half million people.

Madrid is an important cultural centre that has some of the most visited museums in the world: the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía National Museum of Art and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. It has a world-class architectural heritage. A walk along the Gran Vía and visits to the Puerta del Sol, the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza de España are mandatory, as are walks around the Puerta de Alcalá, the Cibeles and Neptune fountains and the Royal Palace, the Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Theatre.

In addition to art, Madrid offers many worthwhile parks, such as the Retiro Park, Casa de Campo, El Capricho and La Quinta de los Molinos.

It has an entertainment agenda on par with any European city.

Another simple plan can be to stroll through its neighbourhoods, from the mythical Malasaña to the streets of the Barrio de las Letras, Chueca and La Latina, where you can enjoy the endless gastronomic offer of the city, with cuisine from all over Spain and Ibero-America.

In addition to the city of Madrid, the Community of Madrid has activities for all tastes and ages throughout the year. Its 179 municipalities offer a huge range of culture, leisure, nature, shopping, gastronomy and many more things to do.

The Madrid region hosts four world heritage sites with enormous touristic interest: the City of Alcalá de Henares; the Royal Site and Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial; the Cultural Landscape of Aranjuez famous for its beautiful gardens; and the Hayedo de Montejo, a singular and unique ecosystem declared a Natural Heritage.

We also recommend visiting the 'Villas de Madrid', eleven unique destinations full of charm with an important cultural, historical and artistic heritage, just a step away from the big city: Manzanares El Real, Patones, San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Torrelaguna, Villarejo de Salvanés, Buitrago del Lozoya, Chinchón, Colmenar de Oreja, Navalcarnero, Nuevo Baztán and Rascafría. You can disconnect, relax and fully enjoy the many possibilities they offer.
