It is very timid and difficult to observe, due to its crepuscular customs and to the fact that it spends much of the time hidden among the vegetation. It feeds on earthworms, insects, small molluscs, tiny snails and even grass and certain seeds. It nests on the ground in a hole which it covers with dead leaves, between the months of March and August. It lays four eggs, which the female incubates. It generally raises its young in woody areas of a certain degree of moisture, with clearings and abundant undergrowth.
