Parque Nacional Garajonay

Bolle's Laurel Pigeon (Columba bollii)

This is the bird of the laurisilva par excellence. It is a bird with a robust appearance, of slate grey colouring with greenish and pinkish iridescence on the neck, it inhabits extensive areas of the Park, and especially those where there are many laurels, fayas and acebitos, whose fruits are the basis of its nourishment.  This beautiful pigeon, which was until recently in danger of extinction due to  poaching and the destruction of its habitat, builds its nest in trees at an approximate height of ten metres. Just like the laurel pigeon (columba Junonae), it lays a single egg, unlike other pigeons which lay two. It is an endemic species in the Canarian laurisilva woodlands.
