El desarrollo de la agricultura a partir del cultivo de semillas, junto con la domesticación de determinadas especies animales, favoreció el establecimiento de asentamientos permanentes y la aparición de formas de organización social más complejas. El libro se inicia con una presentación de las semillas observadas mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido, ofreciendo una perspectiva poco habitual de estas estructuras. A continuación, aborda el origen y la función de las semillas en el ciclo vital de las plantas. La obra también analiza los principales cereales cultivados y consumidos en el mundo —como el maíz, el trigo, el arroz, el mijo y el sorgo—, así como otras semillas de interés alimentario, complementando la información con datos y aspectos de carácter divulgativo.
