  • Introduction

This year, thanks to the offer of Ministry of Environment and Territorial Order from the Government of the Canary Islands, the Seminar has been celebrated in La Laguna, Tenerife. Considering UNESCO´s Patrimony City, La Laguna held the participation of 39 people from 14 different Autonomous Communities. In this edition, various Centers have come for the first time, including two National Parks: Teide and Doñana. Each year the number of interested Institutions attending the Seminar increases, but the budget is limited. For that reason, it is increasingly necessary to select the attending Centers and keep in mind the representativeness of Autonomous Communities, the importance, and dynamism of the Center, etc.

Leading to the interest generated in the last Seminar for following with Web 2.0 topic, Dídac Margaix (through a videoconference) has reviewed the application of some 2.0 tools in our Documentary Centers. Jesús Tramullas, from Documentary Department from the University of Zaragoza, also has commented on the labels and indicators to use to measure audiences and web positioning and continued with free software programs to manage information and bibliographic references on the Internet.

Furthermore, they discussed topics related to the Network of Environmental Information and Documentary Centers (RECIDA). For example, they discussed the portal, which Javier Puertas of Europarc Spain promoted. They also presented the work done with the electronic bulletin working group and announced another possible group of experiences.

Several centers presented experiences in eco-editing, advances in the CIDA-REN network of Castilla and León, the results of the Expert Course on Environmental Information of the Complutense University, and conservation experiences in protected areas.

Thanks to the efforts of Alfonso López Yepes, from the Complutense University of Madrid, some students from the César Manrique Institute of Santa Cruz de Tenerife filmed part of the Seminar presentations. When the tapes edit, they will publish in the  Canal Temático de la UCM, RTVDoc, and they will make links to the requested pages

    THURSDAY 25TH JUNE

    • Videoconference "Libraries on the social web". Didac Margaix. DosPuntoCero
Tools such as blogs, wikis, instant messaging (Meebo), social bookmarking (Delicious), bibliography collection, photo (Flickr) and video (Youtube) sharing, content syndication (RSS), personalized desktops (Netvibes) and social networking sites (Ning) were discussed.
    • Positioning and audiences on the web. Jesús Tramullas. University of Zaragoza.
The tags and indicators to be used (Page Rank, Traffic Rank, Google analytics, Stat Counter) to measure audiences and web positioning have been discussed.
    • Eco-publishing: sustainable management of publications. Andrés Caraballo Roldán. Regional Government of Andalusia.
    • Dinamización del portal RECIDA: reflexiones conjuntas. Javier Puertas. Europarc Spain. They talk about the following topics:

      1. Portal Users. There was discussion on whether the portal should be for a general audience or professionals.s. After a widespread debate, it concluded that it could be helpful to both sectors.

      2. Participation:
      - Administration. The management in Drupal will be carried out, in principle until the end of 2010, by Jesús Tramullas.
      - RECIDA Centers. Each center will have to update the data of its institution and its news. In networks of centers such as Catalonia or Castilla y León, they could assume these tasks from a single coordinating center.
      - Working groups. They will be in charge of posting the information corresponding to their theme.

Before the Seminar, Javier Puertas, Verónica Pajón and Rosa Vela presented the collected data about Electronic Bulletins. It discussed the working methods inside the groups of work. Javier Puertas commented that they had created a Google Docs account to share information and an Email for the working groups red.recida@gmail.com. As there was no time to establish a working method among us, the Seminar Coordination decided to leave it for another time and that the Distribution List would be used to close this topic.

When the Portal is available, the e-bulletin group will take responsibility for compiling those produced by RECIDA and publishing them on the web. Some people thought that it ought to create links from the Portal without dumping the information.

Javier Puertas launched the idea of putting in Google Docs the list of news compiled in each Center to prepare the newsletter. And this is the difference RECIDA members could take advantage of in this work. Teresa Antolín considered that this would standardize the contents of the bulletins, and other attendees also believed that this would mean a loss of richness and variety.

Javier Puertas also presented a possible new working group called Experiences, which would serve, in a systematic way, to share model experiences by RECIDA members. Montse Grabolosa also pointed out that it is interesting to include the frustrated ones. They will use the distribution list to reach a consensus on the data collection form, besides on the composition and coordination of this group.

    FRIDAY 26TH JUNE

    • Active workshop: tools for information management. Jesús Tramullas presented some free software programs that could be useful for information management and especially for bibliographic references on Internet management. Some tools, such as Citeulike (ideal to compile a group of bibliography of interest for RECIDA), Connotea, Mendeley (platform for sharing articles), Zotero (for saving full texts, references, quotes…), were especially interesting.
    • Presentation of the RECIDA Memory 2008-2009. Montserrat Grabolosa. Natural Park VZ Garrotxa. DMAV / Rosario Toril. CENEAM (National Educational Environmental Center).

      1.Processing information and documentation
      - There is a fruitful exchange of information, publications, etc., through the RECIDA Distribution List. On the other hand, the RECIDA File Server use has dropped significantly, and only the coordination team continues to use it.
      - It has detected low participation in the RECIDA Portal use and, in general, a lack of knowledge of how it modifies and enters information.

      2. Difussion
      - The RECIDA report has been updated in Spanish and English so that the members of the Network have the essential data to disseminate RECIDA at all times.
      - It has sent three thousand copies of the RECIDA pamphlet to the printing. The design and the first versions was made by Lluís Mestres and financed by Departamento de Medio Ambiente y Vivienda de la Generalitat de Catalunya (Environment and Home Department from Generalitat of Catalonia). Thanks to Consejería de Medio Ambiente de la Generalitat Valenciana (Ministry of Environment of the Generalitat Valenciana), the designer Toni Galindo made all the necessary modifications to finish the project and the new english and spanish versions of the RECIDA pamphlet. Todas las versiones disponibles a distintas resoluciones están disponibles en el Servidor de ficheros.
They participated actively on the following events:
      - Annual Congress of Europarc. Baiona, from 18th to 22nd June 2008.
      - The 11th International Congress of Ethnobiology. Cusco, Peru, October 2008.
      - National Environmental Congress (CONAMA). Madrid, 1st to 5th December 2008.
      - Meetings and contacts with national and international Parks. For example, Parque del Luberon, representatives of Poland Parks, etc.
      - Fesabid 2009. XI Spanish Conference of Documentation) by FESABID, which means Spanish Federation of Archival Societies Librarianship, Documentation and Museums of Zaragoza, 20th to 22nd May 2009.
 A comunicación sobre la evolución de RECIDA was presented in the section of professional experiences.
It organized a foro de información y documentación ambiental, consisting of a presentation on the RECIDA portal by Jesús Tramullas. Moreover, it also made a round table coordinated by Josep Melero, in which the Autonomous Communities of Valencia, Andalusia, Catalonia and Navarra were there.
They used the space to make it available for a experience Boulevard where some professors and students of the Expert Course in Environmental Information and Documentation of the UCM (University Complutense of Madrid) met.
  • Conclusions

Montserrat Grabolosa y Rosario Toril presented the Action Program (between June 2009 and June 2010), covering the following topics:

    RECIDA website

    • They set October 2009 as the start-up date of the Portal with the new hosting.
    • The coordination presented a proposal for the RECIDA Centers that will send to the list for final approval. Jesús Tramullas asked which Centers had the research into their purposes since this kind of center can obtain finances for their projects. It agreed that this field could add to the center´s file.

    Internal administration of the Network

    • The coordination reported on the changes that will take place in the RECIDA Experts Advisory Committee:
      - In early 2010, Carmen Pérez from INIA (National Institute for Agricultural Research) will retire and be Honorary Member of the Commission. Moreover, it will link to RECIDA to only participate in altruist projects, such as those related to Documentalist without Borders.
      - Jesús Tramullas joins the Commission to advise on the RECIDA web Portal and Drupal, but he also joins as an expert in practical free software resources.
      - Therefore, Elena Primo, Isidro Aguillo and Jesús Tramullas will form the Advisory Committee, in addition to the coordinators Rosario Toril and Montse Grabolosa.
    • They debate the pros and cons of becoming RECIDA as an association, having a legal entity, and being able to apply for subsidies. The most viable option seems to be becoming a professional association. Susana Fernández will be in charge of informing you about this issue.
    • They claimed a definition of the (Policy for integration) into the Network and clarification of what each center has to contribute.
It discussed the contribution level of the centers that are in RECIDA and those that could join it.
Javier Puertas suggested that to be in RECIDA, at least each center should commit to update the website and fill in the Documentary Center from.
The Coordination reminds that it is a collaborative network, whose scope is the Spanish State and that each one contributes according to its possibilities and that if the requirements of being an information and/or Documentary Center on environmental issues are met, its admission cannot be closed.
    • They reported the willingness of RIDA (State Network of Documentation Centers and Libraries on agricultural topics) to join RECIDA. At the FESABID Conference, it initiated contacts with this INIA network coordinated by Carmen Pérez, which has existed for over 20 years and has 40 associated documentation centers.
    • The coordination proposes sharing resources between centers, such as exhibitions and other easily interchangeable resources.

    Diffusion:

    • RECIDA participation in the Global Congress of Libraries and Information: 75th Assembly and General Congress of IFLA (The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions). Milan, Italy, from 23rd al 27th August 2009.
World Library Conferences have created a new section on the Environment and where it will present a paper on RECIDA.
    • Participation through a poster, pamphlets, bookmarks, etc. to the XV Inter-American Meeting of Librarians, Documentalists, and Agricultural Information Specialists. Peru National Library, Lima, from 27th to 29th October 2009.
    • Cities on volcanoes. Tenerife, November 2009.
    • They also commented on other suggestions, such as the use and participation of the Members in Facebook, Tuenti, Ning, Delicious, Wikis, and others, according to the advices of Dídac Margaix and Jesús Tramullas.
    • They are preparing the entrance of RECIDA in Wikipedia.
    • Given that RECIDA´s diffusion is growing, defining a communication strategy is judged appropriate. Javier Puertas commented that he might have some information on this subject. Montse Grabolosa said that the Natural Park Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa elaborated an exhaustive Communication Plan in 2007 that could also serve to extrapolate to RECIDA.

    Collaborations:

    • In addition to the management made by the Complutense University of Madrid for the recording of the Seminar, we can have the opportunity to work together on projects of interest to both parties.
    • Library of the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the University of Salamanca offers to collaborate in any work that may arise.

    Next Seminar edition

    • Juan Marino from Environment Service from Town Council of La Palma offers his island for the next year 's Seminar. But the coordination comments on the difficulties holding it there next year.
    • Also, other Autonomous Communities show their interest, but they have to manage it in their centers. During the year, they will make a decision.
    • Topic to treat the next year:
      - Workshop on intellectual property
      - RECIDA: collaboration projects, lines of collaboration between the centers, actions of the different working centers, possibility of creating working groups for each Autonomous Community, presentation of the experiences that were most appreciated in the portal.
