Critical raw materials

Access to raw materials is crucial for the European Union’s economy and the good functioning of the internal market. In this context, there is a group of non-agricultural nor energetic raw materials which are considered critical due to their economic importance and high exposure to supply risks, as they are often supplied by third countries. Demand of these critical raw materials is prone to exponential growth in the next decades, since they are essential for the green and digital transition.

To address this challenge, the European Commission has approved the Regulation (EU) 2024/1252 of The European Parliament and of the Council of 11 April 2024 establishing a framework for ensuring a secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials and amending Regulations (EU) n.º 168/2013, (EU) 2018/858, (EU) 2018/1724 and (EU) 2019/1020, better known as Critical Raw Materials Act, or CRM Act.
